You're a student, I presume. (No actually, I am a 41 year old computer professional) CND (?????? some regional thing????) not popular anymore so...well...um...oh yes! Attack the monarchy! Wow, its nice for some people to find a little campaign issue and fail to carry out any research on it. Among the site's failures are: A failure to mention how many people believe in the monarchical system - 78% at the last Gallup poll (......BIG DEAL......WHO CARES......MOST PEOPLE THOUGHT THE EARTH WAS FLAT ONCE TOO) The fact that the restoration of Windsor Castle did not cost the tax payer a penny. THIS ASSERTION IS SIMPLY PLAIN WRONG! (Fair enough....have amended it to "WANTED YOU TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS AND HAD TO BE PRESSGANGED INTO COUGHING UP") The Queen is the tenth richest woman in England, so you make her out to be a lot richer than she actually is. I presume you are an Australian (SHOCK HORROR!!) - only a site with such a vacuum of intelligenceand measured argument could be made by an Australian Republican. (I'll be sure to pass that along to them.....you xenophobic twit) You fail to understand the Privvy (?) system - some of the job titles you describe are government posts which are carried out by someone elected to parliament (well why are they listed on the official royal site as part of the royal workforce...or are we all just part of it anyway since we are all "subjects" ?) What is wrong with having lots of employees? Great Britain is hardly going to model its international status on Estonia. (You impugn Estonia?..I must post a news group on that) These employees help her to carry out OFFICIAL DUTIES for which she must work hard. (oh..just like factory workers and miners is that, minus the royal yachts etc) A monarch has a job to do like any other head of state - hereditary or elected. If we had a president he would do exactly the same job. So it is no good devaluing the idea of a head of state - the whole population of the world would disagree with you.(snicker....step outside the UK mate) You don't present us with an alternative - which is very strange indeed. You just protest like a little child "royalty sucks!!!" and that's it. How weird. Perhaps President Thatcher would have been a more palatable alternative? (any Thatcher apart from Margaret would have been fine, but President Thatcher is indeed preferable, vile though her occupation of number 10 was for the majority of the downtrodden English) The vast sums of money taxpayers spend amount to £40,000,000 per year, and if you live in Australia its virtually nothing. Wow, $40 M. That's about the price of a Mars Bar per subject of the UK per year. Oh what I would do with my 60p per year - it would be put to so much use. Yeah, right.(Yeah right give me my Mars Bar...it's rightfully mine) I don't suppose you know much about the Civil List, (why not?) but let me tell you - you might learn something for once. At the time of King George III the Civil List was established to grow closer links between Crown and Government. The Crown would give up the profit it made from the Estate it owned (Duchy of Lancaster, five acres of central London, etc.) in reciprocation for the Civil List. The Crown Estate revenue goes direct to the Treasury. This amounted to £96,000,000 last year. So in fact, the monarchy gives "the people" £96M less the £40M it takes back, which is very unfair as I'm sure you agree. That is why I personally support the privatisation of the Monarchy where they reject the Civil List and are allowed to take the profit from THEIR OWN land. (did you forget how they originally acquired the wherewithal to generate this enormous amount of revenue???) That way they get more money and can lead even more extravagant lifestyles. They could even build a new Royal Yacht with the extra money! (Did the Queen pay you to write that last bit?) THERE.
